This release brings many new features that should make FileSearchEX a little more enjoyable to use. I personally like the pipe “|” delimited support in the “Look In” box. You can specify both a local drive and network UNC path to cover a lot of ground when searching. The “Common Locations” drop down behavior to the “Look In” box was an often requested feature that made it into this release as well. We’re calling it “Keyword” types to show how we expand them to what they truly are.
Thanks to all the emails and comments requesting features. Before we start to beatify the product with images and colors we want the functionality sound. We welcome all feedback, however, as it lets us know what to shoot for. Our goal is to keep the look pretty much to what it is now, but hideaway all the advanced settings so that new users (and users with simple needs who don’t care) don’t have this monstrosity to navigate through. Simple … clean … unobtrusive, that is what FileSearchEX is striving for.
During the v1.0.5 suggestion period at least one request came in for a font change to the “Search Results” ListView. Is this truly desirable? You can change the font size in Windows 7 per user login. In fact, mine is personally set to 120 DPI and the font is pretty big I think. Are people wanting fonts customizable for everything, like all text boxes and labels? We need several more requests before that gets considered.
Take care and happy searching.
Version 1.0.6
August 11, 2011
. Added support for pipe “|” delimited entries in the “Look In” box.
. Added option to search using keyword types “Desktop, My Computer, etc”.
. Added option to sort search results automatically.
. Added option to customize file extensions when file content searching.
. Fixed tab order on main form.

Would it be possible to include PDF, XLS and MHT files to the types it can search within?
Great product.
Many thanks!
Jerry,
This is possible with the 1.0.6 version. Just go to “View / Settings” and add those files type extensions to the list. Note that entries are pipe “|” delimited.
Hi,
I’ve just upgraded to Win7 from XP and hate the inbuilt search, so was directed here from this forum after a quick Google. Does FileSearchEX support delimited list of search wildcards? I’m constantly using the search on individual directories looking for “*.aspx; *.ascx; *.dll;” (for example).
I’m really hoping it does, and that I’ve just failed to work out the correct syntax (I tried pipes)… because it looks perfect for my needs.
Cheers,
Tom
Tom,
We are adding features that people request. This feature will be present in version 1.0.7 due out soon. We would appreciate your feedback. Do you like the thought of using pipes ( | ) as the delimiter? So in the “Search for files or folders named” you would like to type:
*.aspx | *.ascx | *.dll
Is that what you’re expecting?
Hi William – thanks for the quick response
My preference would be for semi-colons, that way it would mimic the original XP search more closely – but if it needed to be pipes, then I’m sure I’d cope!
I think, however, the most useful thing for me would be the ability for SearchFileEX to *remember* previous search terms (again, just like the original XP which would provide the popup list), so I could quick choose which set of files I need. If that’s difficult (which I imagine it could be) then at least remember the *last* search term to be used (which it doesn’t appear to at the moment).
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Tom
Tom,
Windows XP also allows for the use of pipe. The issue we have with semi-colon is that folders can be named with a semi-colon so to make it easy on ourselves we would like to avoid use of that … we might just make it an option to choose your own delimiter with the user being aware of the risk of NOT being able to find files or folders containing that character.
As far as remembering previous search terms … our test XP box is not exhibiting that behavior. Could you be more specific in what you’re seeing or provide a screen shot?
